Rocker switches - the clear choice for at-a-glance operation

  26/02/2019

Sometimes, bigger really is better. When you’re choosing the right switch for the job, rocker switches definitely have size on their side.

Rocker switches tend to have a larger footprint - which might be a problem where space is tight. But their size makes customisation easy - icons can clearly show their function, and backlighting can show at a glance whether they are on or off.

The other option - a smaller toggle switch - presents less options for backlighting, no room for labels on the switch itself, and more precision attention when switching.

Rocker switches are easy to see, difficult to knock accidentally, and easy to operate, switching with just light pressure from a finger.

The perfect example is Marquardt’s 1656 single pole rocker switch. Requiring a 28.0 x 13.0 mm appliance cut-out for installation, compared to 12mm each way for a single pole toggle switch, it’s a good deal larger.

But with a silk matt printable surface and options for illumination, it’s a powerful switch which can be easily seen and customised. The photo - which is not to scale - demonstrates the difference in space for words or icons between the rocker and a standard toggle.

Rockers switches work a little bit like a seesaw in a children’s playground - rocking back and forth on a pivot point. Press one side to depress it, and the other side of the switch is raised. Most rockers are designed for low amperage circuits, so are perfect for car controls.

For controlling fog lights, power door lock switches, rear screen demisters and hazard lights, rocker switches are a common choice. Their size makes them easy to operate whilst keeping an eye on the road.

In fact, rocker switches can be found on virtually all cars coming off the production line now.

Decades of experience in the automotive industry makes Marquardt a preferred supplier to vehicle manufacturers worldwide - from the luxury passenger sector through to the military vehicle provider.
Marquardt has a great deal of experience in automotive component design - developing positioning elements for electric convertible roofs, hood locks and seats.

The company doesn’t believe in standing still. After moving into the Indian market in 2008 - supplying switches to commercial vehicle manufacturers, it began reaching out to passenger vehicle makers in a few years’ time, eventually establishing a facility in Mumbai a couple of years ago.

As an innovative company, they continue to invest in the future of transport - developing e-bikes and battery management systems for the new market in of electric vehicles. Marquardt keeps itself at the head of the curve when it comes to keeping the world moving.
